Buying a gun safe – thoughts for consideration

On the 13th – 15th February 2015 Stoneleigh Manor hosted the Great British Shooting Show which is established as the UK’s premier public showcase and launch pad for major International gun manufacturers, gun retailers and shooting accessory suppliers.

The show took place literally down the road from where our Headquarters are based and thought it’d be useful to cover some frequently asked questions when buying a gun safe.

How many guns do you have?

Gun safes come in a range of sizes, which focus on how many guns you can store, some gun safes provide additional storage with shelves or ammunition boxes within them. When purchasing your gun safe you should consider whether you would benefit from the additional storage. Some of our customers already own ammunition safes so require storage solely for their guns – it’d also be worth a conversation with your local firearms as to how and where you store your ammunition.

Advice from the industry when it comes to buying a gun safe is to buy bigger than required, as they soon fill up and who wants two gun safes!? We sell gun safes that offer a capacity of 3 – 14 guns, so there is plenty to choose from!

What style of gun do you own?

Next thing, once you’ve decided on capacity and additional storage features, you’ll then need to pick the right type of safe for your guns. There are two variances within the gun safe market, one being for shotguns and the other being for rifles with scopes (as well as shotguns) – so naturally shop for the safe that can store your collection of firearms.

Do you have a lock preference?

Dependant on your needs will determine which type of gun safe you require. Next on the checklist is all about preference. What would you prefer your locking type to be? Some gun safes are lockable via a key, an electronic combination lock or by a fingerprint scan – there are pros and cons to each of the methods, so it’s best to go with what’s right for you rather than trend. Are you the type of person to misplace keys, if so an electronic lock may be better, or go for a fingerprint scan if you prefer your things to be tech!

Locking types come down to personal preference, some customers like keys whereas others prefer electronic combination – it’s entirely up to you!

If you need help choosing take a read of our blog post “what’s better, an electronic or key lock?”

Do you need adjustable shelves?

Some of the gun safes come with a fixed or an adjustable shelf allowing for guns to be stored barrel up or barrel down – this again is a preference for some customers. Please take note of the product item details as to which feature your desired safe will have.

All of the gun safes sold on our website are made to the British Standards BS 7558/92, part of this comes police approval so you can rest assured that these safes are suitable for your storage. Advice given to all of our customers is to speak with your local Firearms Officer before purchasing.

To ensure that your gun safe is secure as possible you may wish to bolt the safe to the floor or walls. Each of the gun safes sold on our website come with pre drilled holes enabling for the safe to be fixed.
